Purpose

This study will help us learn how to protect a broken heart after the loss of a spouse or significant other by identifying factors that can improve health and wellbeing during this difficult life transition.

Inclusion Criteria

    Individuals who have lost a spouse or domestic partner within the last 3 months (+/- 45 days), and who are of Latin or non-Latino White origin.

Exclusion Criteria

    • Individuals with evidence of liver or kidney failure;
    • Individuals with significant visual or auditory problems, and/or cognitive impairment;
    • Individuals with major medical conditions involving the immune system such as autoimmune and/or inflammatory diseases including rheumatoid arthritis and ulcerative colitis;
    • Individuals who smoke;
    • Individuals with alcohol or drug abuse;

    Individuals with regular use of medications with major immunological consequences (e.g., steroids), those on medications for angiotensin type I receptor blockers, and those taking statins. Those taking aspirin will not be excluded because this did not reduce IL-6 and CRP inflammation in previous work. However, it will be assessed.
