Human gut bacteria and healthy aging
Lay Description
The research team is interested in how the human gut bacteria influence aging. Study participants will be asked to complete a health questionnaire, physical assessment, and provide a blood and stool sample. The health questionnaire, physical assessment, and blood sample will be done at the Barshop Research Clinic, which is located at the UT Health San Antonio campus. Stool samples will be collected in the comfort of the participant’s home.

Inclusion Criteria
Exclusion Criteria
- Prior gastrointestinal surgery
- Diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease
- Use of the following medications in the past three months:
- Antibiotics or probiotics
- Gastric acid suppressants
- Laxatives or anti-diarrheal medications
- Anti-depressants or anti-anxiety medications
- Steroids or biologic/immune modulating drugs (for example, cancer medications)
- Metformin
